Rallye Challenge is the second division in German Rallye sports. This top series for private persons is contested in two regions (Northern and Southern) with six heats each throughout Germany, before the champions of the Rallye Challenge are chosen in the common finals in the Erz Mountains and the Wartburg rallye.

More than 120 teams compete regularly for points and places. It is a hotly contested championship, as because of ingenious rules cars of different performance standards can compete directly.

One of the most contested classes of the Rallye Challenge is the 2 litre capacity class – it was dominated in the season of 2000 by the current champion and two-time winner of the Rallye Challenge, Norbert Moufang with Ramona Otto, and the Westerwald Rallye Team with Frank Höhner and Oliver Schumacher. Both teams start with an Opel Kadett C with modern 16-valve technology and race injection. They frequently showed their evenness by dividing the best times on the scoring boards „brotherly“ between them, sometimes they even passed the finishing line with exactly the same time. The other drivers in this scoring category could nothing but say: „They both drive in another division“.

DRIVER & CO-PILOT

Although the „birth date“ of the Opel Kadett C of Frank Höhner and co-pilot Oliver Schumacher is registered on the identification card with the year 1977, state-of-the-art technology is hidden under the white panel.
The Kadett is powered by a 2-litre engine from Risse with 16-valve technology and a modern throttle valve race injection.
Base of the engine is a 3.0 24V cylinder head shorted to 4-cylinder. The good 270 of horse power are transferred by a 5-gear „Getrag“ race transmission to the rear axle. A chassis with special modifications by Bilstein and Eibach guarantees an optimum road holding.

The high-performance braking system specially developed for motor sport ends guarantees optimum delay results. According to the type of scoring round up to ten different tire types are at the drivers’ disposal, which can be mounted on different rim sizes, depending on the transmission ratio needed. ... drifting ...

Although some technical defects crossed any chance to gain one of the first places in the ranking at the end of a thrilling season, Frank Höhner and Oliver Schumacher were with their Opel Kadett C and Risse power two of the absolute stars of the Rallye Challenge in the season of 2000. ... jumping ...

Urgently needed parts for the revision of the special transmission didn’t come in time, nevertheless the company Risse in Soest managed to make the transmission fit for use without the missing parts in very short time. In this last heat of the Challenge everything went according to plan. But an involuntary trip into the Green damaged all front plastic parts, and the windscreen broke. But in a very short service time the Kadett was ready to go again and even the windscreen had been changed. Höhner /Schumacher drove to victory in their category and showed how important a good co-operation of all people involved is in this sport.

Until the 5th of 14 scoring rounds all went well for Höhner / Schumacher. Taking 5th place in the overall ranking until then, the drive shaft broke in scoring round 5. There was too little time to change the shaft, and because of timeout they were disqualified. It was little comfort to them that they had collected enough points during the season to make a respectable 8th place in the overall ranking.
